Non Structured Evaluation
Nonstructural components are architectural, mechanical, and electrical components and systems permanently installed in buildings that are an integral part of a building system, including their supports and connections. Nonstructural components can pose significant life-threatening risks during an earthquake. These are due to two primary causes; differential movement of nonstructural components and lack of component capacity. Additionally, components such as toxic substances can also pose significant hazards.
The goal of Nonstructural Assessment and Risk Reduction is defined as reducing the Nonstructural Injury Risk levels of all building exit routes to acceptable life-safety levels as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The life-safety performance level is primarily intended to prevent nonstructural fall hazards that could directly cause injury. The issue of exit protection is addressed by rehabilitating the relevant nonstructural components to a life-safety performance level.
Nonstructural Performance is the post-earthquake damage condition where potentially significant and costly damage has occurred to nonstructural components, but they have not dislodged or fallen and do not pose a threat to life inside or outside the building. The exit routes within the building are not extensively blocked but may be blocked by light debris. HVAC, plumbing, and fire suppression systems may be damaged, which could lead to localized flooding and loss of function. Although injuries may occur due to failure of nonstructural components during an earthquake, the overall risk of life-threatening injuries is expected to be very low. Repair of nonstructural components may require extensive effort.
The nonstructural assessment study aims to develop:
• Nonstructural upgrade for occupant safety,
• Preparation of floor plans showing the location of nonstructural deficiencies,
The second phase aims to design and cost estimate the upgrade of nonstructural elements.
• Bills of quantities and cost estimates for nonstructural retrofitting,
• Development of guidelines for nonstructural retrofitting and typical nonstructural rehabilitation drawings
